Man v.s. Self- Ashley is letting her fear of getting to attached control her life and it's making it really hard to get close to Matt. They are good friends all, but after Matt leaves and he calls her, Ashley tries to keep it small talk. Since there is only so much small talk you can talk, it goes into deeper conversation and that scares her, so she just stops calling him all in general. She also ran away from him twice when he confessed his love for her because she was scared of getting attached. And it made her miserable not hanging out with Matt. She needs to realize she loves Matt and needs to not be scared of that love and instead let him know.
Change Can Be A Good Thing- Ashley refuses to focus on something other than The List and then it gets to the point where she chooses The List over Matt and completely ruins their relationship. Even when she gets to the point where she only has four things on The List, she still refuses to talk to Matt. Until she finds out that he is the only reason she crossed off so many things over the summer, he planned all of it. She then decides that if Matt was willing to respect her list and try to help her complete The List, he might be worth it. Abandoning The List saves their relationship.
Look In Plain Sight- Throughout the book Ashley believes that what she wants is to finish her list and then get married, but when she meets Matt Gibson, everything changes. She soon starts thinking she wants something else instead of The List, but it switches back and forth. When she finally chooses The List over Matt, she feels starts to feel hollow. She realizes she misses Matt and that he is what she wants, not The List. She even goes up on a stage in front of a huge crowd, including Matt, and sings then rips up The List in front of him and ends it with a big apology.
